Announcements 2010 - 2011

14-Dec-2011 The Structure Commission has added a new feature to the
    Database of Zeolite Structures
To provide more quantitative information about the size of the channel systems for the different framework types, the diameters of the largest spheres that
(1) can be included in the framework,
(2) can diffuse along a, b and c
are now given as part of the framework type description. Details of how these calculations are performed can be found in

14-Sep-2010 CNRS 2010 Gold Medal awarded to Gérard Férey (member of the IZA Council),
  chemist and materials designer
The CNRS Gold Medal, France's highest distinction in scientific research, has been awarded this year to chemist Gérard Férey. This prestigious annual prize rewards the works of a prominent personality who has made an exceptional contribution to the dynamism, reputation and influence of French scientific research. Gérard Férey is a researcher in the physicochemistry of solids and inorganic or hybrid materials. He specializes in the design of hybrid porous materials, in particular for the storage of CO2 or medicines. With the help of his team, he predicts and explains the behavior of these nanomaterials, which have a wide range of useful properties and potential applications in the fields of energy, sustainable development and healthcare. Férey is a member of the Academie des Sciences and professor emeritus at the Université de Versailles Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines (UVSQ). He served as deputy director of the CNRS Chemical Sciences Department before founding and heading the Institut Lavoisier in Versailles (UVSQ/CNRS).

1-Sep-2010 Rustum Roy (1924-2010)

It is with great sadness that we must report that Prof. Rustum Roy, one of the early pioneers of zeolite synthesis, passed away on August 26, 2010.

After obtaining B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees at Patna University in India, Rustum Roy received his Ph.D. from the Pennsylvania State University, where he remained for 65 years. In the 1950's his research group was the only academic group in the USA doing synthesis research on zeolites, and Len Sand and Fred Mumpton were both former students. In 1958 he and Joe Smith (then an Assoc. Prof. of Mineralogy at Penn State) organized what was probably the first International Zeolite Meeting at Penn State, attended by R.M. Barrer and D.W. Breck, amongst others. In 1962 Prof. Roy founded the first interdiscplinary Materals Research Laboratory, and was its Director for 23 years. He was the Evan Pugh Professor of Solid State Chemistry and Professor of Geochemistry, and was also a Distinguished Professor of Materials Science at Arizona State University and a visiting Professor of Medicine at the University of Arizona. He was an elected member of the US National Academy of Engineering and of numerous national and international scientific academies. He authored and co-authored over a thousand publications. A more complete orbituary can be found here.

29-Jul-2010 News from the Zeolite 2010 Congress in Sofia, Bulgaria (11-18 July 2010)
This meeting of the International Natural Zeolite Association was organized by Ognyan Petrov of the Central Laboratory of Mineralogy and Crystallography of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences and was attended by about 120 researchers from 30 different countries. The field trip in Eastern Rhodopes covered the best natural zeolite deposits in Bulgaria and included the recently discovered Thracian holy city and Byzantine fortress Perpericon built within zeolitized rock.
    Congratulations to

16-Jul-2010 Imre Kiricsi (1948-2010)

It is with great sadness that we must report that Prof. Imre Kiricsi, organizer of the First International Conference of the Federation of European Zeolite Associations (FEZA) in Eger, Hungary in 1999 and one of the members of the FEZA Council, passed away on July 11, 2010.

Prof. Kiricsi initiated the foundation of the Hungarian Zeolite Association in 1992, and had been its president since 1998. During this time, the HZA organized several international meetings and Prof. Kiricsi served as the co-editor of the resulting proceedings. He was the Director of the Applied Chemistry Department at Szeged Univeristy Attila Jósef and the recipient of a number of prizes, including the Gold Cross of Merit of the Hungarian Republic in 2006 and the Albert Szent-Gyorgyi Prize in 2010. 11-Jan-2010 Henk van Koningsveld (1942-2009)
It is with great sadness that we must report that Dr. Henk van Koningsveld, a member of the Structure Commission of the IZA for the past 15 years, passed away on December 4, 2009.

Dr. van Koningsveld was a very active member of the Structure Commission, and served as Co-chair from 2001-2007. The building schemes for each of the zeolite framework types that are available on the internet via the Database of Zeolite Structures are entirely his work. In 2007, he put these together and published them in the book Compendium of Zeolite Framework Types. Together with Hermann Gies, he also prepared the pdf files for the Catalog of Disorder in Zeolite Frameworks. He is probably best known in the zeolite community though for his single-crystal refinement of the structure of ZSM-5 that was published in 1987.

Henk's cheerful presence will be sorely missed at the next International Zeolite Conference.
